REVIEW: Bet in the Dark by Rachel Higginson

Bet in the Dark
Book Description:

goodreads-badge-add-plusAll Ellie Harris wanted was a life of her own.

In a shortsighted decision, she follows her high school boyfriend to college, only to get cheated on and then dumped. And to add insult to injury her overprotective family is suddenly clinging to her again, fighting to control every part of her life.

Bad luck follows her hasty decision and when her roommate steals her identity and leaves town, Ellie is left to clean up a gigantic mess.

Fin Hunter insists Ellie owes him seven thousand dollars from an online poker game and he is determined to get it from her. Determined to keep her family out of her life, Ellie agrees to work for Fin in his illegal online poker operation. He’s given her six weeks to pay off the debt.

Soon sparks are flying between them and the only thing keeping her from falling for him is the debt she still owes and the money she doesn’t have.

At the end either Ellie will have to pay the mistaken debt or bet in the dark that her feelings for Fin will be worth more than the money.

“I love you, Ellie. You came into my life and demanded that I paid attention. I’m not letting you go, I won’t. I’ve let a lot of things go in my life, things that needed to be set free, things that if I didn’t release I would have become bitter and empty. You are not one of those things; you are one of the rare, beautiful things that I am desperate to keep. I want you forever, Ellie.”
Ellie has always grown up under the watchful eye of her three brothers and her parents. Now in college, dealing with her cheating ex-boyfriend, her terrible roommate and still fending off her brothers, Ellie is determined to continue living her independent life. That is until Finley Hunter pays Ellie a visit.

When Bet in the Dark starts off Ellie and Fin are in a heated argument over money that she owes for a gambling bet unpaid. Ellie isn’t at fault but unfortunately Fin isn’t convinced and he needs his money. So against his better judgment Fin makes a deal with her in order to get his money back.  Ellie must be his personal secretary and she must pay off her debt in 6 weeks, at all cost.
But the two don’t count on the attraction that sparks between them.

“And Ellie, if Fin is offering his heart to you, it’s just a formality because believe me when I say you already have it.”
Fin is a ladies man running an illegal gambling ring. He is everything Ellie should stay away from but can’t help being pulled too. Throughout this story she tries to fight off every emotion she is feelings towards him. But Fin is much more than what the eye sees. He’s hardworking, devoted to his family, sweet, loving and attentive. Under his tough and intimidating exterior he has a heart of gold which will make you swoon over him quickly!

Unfortunately, Ellie although sassy at times, which I like, was very much frustrating by the end. I understood her desire to want to be independent but she was rude and mean about her families protectiveness and love. She only saw the bad in them when it was really the good. And the moment she found out why Fin needed his money I would have thought she would have wanted to help him, at all cost. Even if she had to stop thinking about herself for once, and asked her parents for help. That didn’t happen and I thought at that point her argument was weak. Throughout the book I felt like she was the selfish one.

The other characters in this book were awesome; I would go as far as to say, much better than the main protag. I loved Grayson, Lennox, and Breckett, Ellie’s brothers, and their protectiveness over her. I loved the possible brewing romance between two of the characters’ and hope to see more of them in a future book! :-)

There is nothing more difficult than contemplating what rating to give a book from an author you have never rated below a 4. If you’ve read any of Rachel’s fabulous books you would know how quickly it’s easy to get sucked into the storyline, how every character captures your heart, and how amazingly the romance is built! Sadly, this book was missing some of it. But don’t let that deter you from reading it. It was a good read and the storyline was different.

So pick this up! Read it! Enjoy it!

REVIEW: Lash (Broken Angel #1) by L.G. Castillo

Book Description:
Decades after being banished from Heaven for saving a life he shouldn’t have, Lash is given a chance to redeem himself. His mission: protect Naomi Duran, a young woman who has lost her faith. The assignment proves to be anything but simple when his superiors, the Archangels, withhold key information about Naomi and refuse to restore Lash’s powers. When an unexpected source reveals centuries-old secrets, his trust is shaken to the core, and he begins to doubt those whom he had once considered to be his greatest allies.

Determined to avoid anything that would risk his chances of returning to Heaven, Lash struggles with the greatest obstacle of all—his growing feelings for Naomi. But when her life is threatened by an unknown source, Lash questions the wisdom of the Archangels and his ability to keep her safe.

Soon, Lash will have to choose where to place his faith—in the home he has fought so hard to regain or in the forbidden love he can’t bear to lose.

"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. "                                                                       ~ Lao Tzu
Javier Duran was destined to do great things, which is why he is protected in a deadly accident by an angel. But when that angel changes the course of the events, life takes a different course for Javier and for the angel.

Fast forward  3 decades….

21 year old Naomi has lost a lot in her life. After losing her mother to cancer and her father in a tragic “accident” Naomi has given up on faith.  It wasn’t enough to have lost her mother but to lose her father in such a tragic way is too much for her to handle. When she decides to take her life, destiny intercedes. In the form of Lahash, a fallen angel.

Lash has been living on earth as a fallen angel for a long time because of his necessity of interfering with divine will. He is reckless and doesn’t give a shit about anybody because no one gives a shit about him. If they did he would be with his family and life wouldn’t suck so much. He hates livng among the humans so he does drugs, sleeps around and lives a wild life. He is careless and reckless.

When he is finally given an assignment and a chance to return home, Lash jumps into his new job. Protecting Naomi Duran is a piece of cake until he discovers that there are things in the works that he has no knowledge of. Naomi is part of a much bigger plan and it all started the day Lash saved two young lives.

Lash would do anything to protect Naomi and as the two spend time together he realizes that it’s not because of his job anymore. The feelings he has for her are much more than that of an angel protecting a human. And Naomi has been staving off getting close to Lash because the people she love are being taken from her.

But Naomi and Lash slowly discover that what is destined cannot be changed.

There is no doubt though that Lash will have you enthralled from the very first page! Naomi’s abuelita, or Welita, as she likes to be called, will have you smiling and remembering your wonderful grandmothers. And her cousin Chuy will remind you of that older cousin who is very protective of you. Being Hispanic I have to say that I loved the Spanish aspect to this book and can’t wait to read more!

A good fallen angel romance but I do feel like the readers connection with the characters was lacking. It sort of felt like it was a story told instead of a story lived and that made it a little bland to read.

Buy this. Read it. Enjoy it.

REVIEW: Love & Decay, Episode #2 by Rachel Higginson

Love and Decay, Episode One

Episode #2:
Zombies- as if that wasn’t enough to ruin any girl’s dream of a happily ever after.

Reagan and Haley thought they had life figured out. Kill a few Zombies in the morning, scavenge for food, kill some more Zombies, find a place to take cover for the night. Life was simple and relatively routine. Well, until they met the Parker brothers.

Now, they’re road-tripping south together, in the hopes of escaping the Apocalypse riddled world they live in and finding some peace on the other side of the equator. Hendrix and Vaughan make some things easier with their ample supply of weapons and ability to scout out safe places and travel unharmed. But then some things are more difficult with two gorgeous, protective boys working hard to convince Reagan she needs them.

But who has time for feelings when there are scarier things to worry about? When they run into an outpost of militia, their futures might be decided for them. Now they don’t only have to dodge Zombies, but figure out a way to escape a settlement full of men intent on making the Parker brothers soldiers and Haley and Reagan join their brothel of women.

Survival at the end of the world is a costly thing, and Reagan can only take it one day at a time. With the Parker brothers and their precious sister Page now in the mix, survival is even more imperative and this day, more than any other, might be the most dangerous of them all.

Love and Decay, Episode two, the second in a novella series in a Dystopian Romance about Zombies, the end of the world and finding someone to share it with.
This story takes place over multiple episodes, with a release date every two weeks.

Episode #2 REVIEW
"Love wasn’t what motivated me yet. But I could feel it coming, feel it rolling into my life slowly, securely, in a way that wouldn’t get erased or replaced. And while I waited for love, I would fight this decay and live with hope. Because if it was all I had, hope when everything was hopeless, wasn’t so bad."
Reagan and Haley have set out toward Peru with The Parker family. As they travel, Reagan and Haley are taught how to protect themselves and find themselves wanting to protect the others as well. But just when they seem to be getting on, trouble hits. Not only in the form of Zombies but also humans, humans that aren’t friendly and refuse to take NO as an answer.

With no other option, they follow the mad men to their compound.

During their time there Reagan realizes that not one but two Parker men are possibly interested in her. There is Vaughn, their leader and the oldest, who is sweet and protective of everyone he loves. And then there is Hendrix, who is like his older brother but different in a serious way. Vaughn is pretty subtle with his intent but Hendrix has never been subtle and he stirs feelings in Reagan that she has never felt.

But in a world of decay they live in, Love is hard for Reagan to believe in.  The only thing she has is hope. Hope that they all make it out alive, that there is a possibility of reclaiming humanity and that maybe Peru isn’t a hopeless goal.

Hope is the only thing she has left; but love isn’t too far off…

Episode two will take you on the next step of this adventure! You will be so infuriated at times, laugh your head off at others, and swoon over the overly protective brothers!

Continue this wonderful novella series! Pick up Episode #2 on July 26th! Don’t miss out!

REVIEW: Branded by Abi Ketner & Missy Kalicicki

Branded (Sinners, #1)
Book Description:

Fifty years ago the Commander came into power and murdered all who opposed him. In his warped mind, the seven deadly sins were the downfall of society. He created the Hole where sinners are branded according to their sins and might survive a few years. At best.
Now LUST wraps around my neck like blue fingers strangling me. I’ve been accused of a crime I didn’t commit and now the Hole is my new home.

Darkness. Death. Violence. Pain.

Now every day is a fight for survival. But I won’t die. I won’t let them win.

The Hole can’t keep me. The Hole can’t break me.
I am more than my brand. I’m a fighter.
My name is Lexi Hamilton, and this is my story.

"Humans will not be a form of entertainment. And remember, my brave friends, you can overcome anything short of death—so free them. —C. Hamilton"
Fifty years ago the Commander enforced a new way of living. In this new world those who have committed one of the seven deadly sins are branded and sent to The Hole. The Hole is a place which is heavily guarded and cut off from the everyday society. The sinners are treated like criminals and watched over every single moment. And when people are treated like criminals they will become just that, which makes The Hole deadly

When Lexi Hamilton is branded with a blue tattoo on her neck, signifying Lust,  she joins the mass of other sinners and is sent to the very place everyone fears. A place where those branded with her kind of sin rarely survive.

But Lexi is strong and determined to survive... everything short of death
"He thinks he can destroy me by stripping away my possessions. But he can’t and I won’t let him take my memories, my ambition, and my pride."

In The Hole she finds herself alone and scared of the unknown. That is until she meets a wonderful little girl that shows her how to have strength.
"Somehow, this girl found a way into my heart, and taught me how to live, how to care, and most importantly, how to love someone."
As well as a doctor that is kind to her, a man that shows her to defend herself and a guard that will risk it all to save her.

Cole is not like your everyday guard. He is dedicated to his job but he tries to treat his prisoners with respect. When he is given his first female prisoner Cole is ready to go through the motions. But Lexi isn't like his usual prisoners. As Cole gets to know her he tries and fight off the attraction he quickly develops for her. But not falling for the girl that fights to survive, that comforts a little girl in need, and has the most beautiful smile, is not an easy feat.
"I never planned on falling for you. You were just an assignment. But it just sort of happened and now look where I am. Stuck between two walls that won’t budge either way. I’m trapped by you and my obligations as a guard."
Together Cole and Lexi fights to survive against the evil of the Commander and The Hole, but also struggle to keep their feelings to themselves. They both know that a relationship between a guard and a sinner is punishable by death and torture. A lesson that Lexi is taught quickly after arriving at The Hole.No matter how Cole treats her or how much she cares for him she has to learn to hide or erase those feelings. But when love is found it is not easy to ignore, and loving Cole might be her greatest sin.

Lexi's story will capture you from the very first page and never let go. You will lose hours of sleep while reading this one! Branded is dark and beautiful. You will cry. You will smile. You will be terrified. And your heart will melt.

"So you know what? Yeah, she broke me. She weakened me. But it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me… because I have her. And that’s one thing I wouldn’t change."
Branded is the story to read! Pick it up!

~BLOG TOUR~ REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Taken by You by Carlie Sexton

Book Description:

How tragic it is when a caged spirit finally finds its freedom and — entranced in its ecstasy — is invited by that freedom into a cloaked dance with danger.

In Book One of this three-part epic, Kate Simmons — young and alluring, and finally out of her cage of grief — attracts more than attention. Intoxicated by her newfound independence, a blithe Kate is on her way to finding out that around the corners of life, some life-changing eye-openers await. As the story continues in Book Two and she begins to churn a dangerously turbulent trail, it is Kate who now has to snap to, to react, to outrun, or become yet another tortured victim who vanishes down the path of wrong choice.

Having already roiled the risky waters of jealousy, Kate moves in with Neil while Roger — an enamored oddity — visits his son in Germany. Upon his return and finding Kate gone, Roger’s predator mind becomes unhitched, and then unleashed, on the hunt of a lifetime. But whose life?
Step by creeping step, even as Kate’s future closes in on her, she attends — obliviously — to her new life, working through the challenges of fresh relationships, losing family members both to death and to deceit, questioning the depth of love.

goodreads-badge-add-plus Every path offers a choice. Every choice offers a consequence. And every consequence summons its due. As emotions swirl across fateful days and nights, some in Kate’s life will reach out to touch happiness in warm embraces, others to sever ties in bloody traces.
The stains of passion are frequently mistaken. The question here is who will be taken?
My Review
Life isn’t going to ever be normal for Kate. After suffering through the worse event in her life Kate is trying to come to terms with the life she now has to live. As long as Roger is on the loose Kate will not be free. Now on the alert and hiding, Kate must deal with everything else in life as well as Rogers hunt for her.

Kate and Neil are finally together and are happy as ever but doubts threaten their relationship and Kate must come to terms with Neil’s love and devotion for her. While she questions everything he does, Neil works to show her that she is the love of his life and he would do anything to protect her.

But Roger will do anything to have Kate and as he tries to find her he also has to put up with a new girlfriend and his son’s mother. Two women that are in the way of him getting back Kate. Two women that he would not second guess in killing. Because killing is second nature to Roger.

Taken by You is Kate’s story separate from Rogers hunt. It is filled with Neil and Kate’s passion, Kate’s doubts and stubbornness, and Rogers psychotic behavior.

But I must mention that sadly, Taken by You suffered from the second book syndrome. Although the writing was better there was a lack of action and too much mundane events.

I however will read the final book because we are left with a major cliffhanger! I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with these three and hopefully see Kate get her HEA.

Happy Reading!

REVIEW: Love & Decay, Episode 1 by Rachel Higginson

Love and Decay, Episode One

Episode #1:

Zombies- as if that wasn’t enough to ruin any girl’s dream of a happily ever after.

Reagan said goodbye to love when she was forced to run her high school boyfriend over with her mom’s car just to keep him from eating her for dinner. Now, two years later, and in need of a serious shower, she’s just over the entire concept of a soul mate- or really, any kind of mate.

Well, mostly anyway. When she runs- literally- into a group of boys holed up in a relative utopia of peanut butter and bottled water, maybe all hope in the love department is not lost.

But at the end of the world, nothing can be simple. And with a horde of Zombies after her, Reagan is going to have to schedule falling in love between hunting and surviving. Hopefully she can last long enough find out if true love can still exist when everything else has started to fall apart.goodreads-badge-add-plus

Love and Decay, Episode One, the first in a novella series in a Dystopian Romance about Zombies, the end of the world and finding someone to share it with.
This story takes place over multiple episodes, with a release date every two weeks.
"Things would be exciting in this world of love and decay."

Having a possible cure turn everyone into zombies was not what Reagan thought would be the story of her life. She pictured something like having the perfect life with a picture perfect future. But two years later she is kicking zombie ass with her bestfriend, Hayley, instead of attending college. And when the two raid a department store and are cornered by zombies Reagan and Hayley are set on surviving.

Cue the brothers that come to the rescue!

Hendrix, Vaughn, King, Nelson, Harrison, and little Page are surviving in the zombie infested world, just as the girls are. When Reagan literally stumbles into their hiding place the brothers are at first hesitant. But when Hendrix is sized up by Reagan and her witty comebacks and the others feel an obligation to protect them, they quickly become allies.

Together they continue fighting off zombies and begin their journey South, where they hope to get away from the zombie infestation.

You will love every character in this book and will dread what might be coming in future books. I couldn’t help but quickly feel sad that something terrible might happen to any of them! Here’s hoping to some more kick ass action, romance and no losses.

Episode 1 of Love & Decay will quickly enrapture you and have you turning page after page. Rachel Higginson does not disappoint with this Zombie Dystopian world romance! I’m looking forward to episode 2 coming on July 26th!
